I was born around the corner from Maister House in Salthouse Lane (1946). I played on the steps of this building with my two older sisters. It took a while, but now I have made it up those stairs and am due to give a talk inside!

Between then and now, I had a detour via Hessle Road with my camera. So, I am going to chat about my latest Hessle Road photobook – signed copies available. After hitch-hiking to Sicily and awaiting the midnight boat to Malta (1967), I took a photo of Italian fishermen repairing their nets on the dockside. Subsequently, it dawned on me: “My hometown of Hull is a deepsea trawling port, so why not photograph the people who live in the fishing community?” And so I did.

I took thousands of images with my second-hand Rolleicord camera (£12); held dozens of exhibitions in the UK and USA; published scores of books and articles; gave hundreds of lectures; and now I am pleased to freely support Maister House in their Recital Sundays during August 2023. Please make a generous donation towards Eclectic Music – and even buy my books / videos to support little old me too!

- dreaming ourselves awake

I am a dreamer and the thinker. From childhood I was told I had a vivid imagination. I see faces in trees, castles in clouds, and ships in the embers of a fire. It was often said of me that I live in another world, though I manage quite well in this one. Much of my poetry emerges from dreams. For these reasons I am recently enthused by a study of Quantum Physics, because this does allow for other worlds and other ways of seeing things, which greatly appeals to my imagination. I turned to poetry and writing after studying English Literature at The University of Hull as a mature student.

Among my publications are: The Stage in my Life, The Virgin Tales of a Theatrical Landlady, Hutton Press 1997; The Myth of Myself, An Allegory, Wordspin Online Publications 2003; four books of poems in the Fifteen Poems Series: Humberlands; Sealed with a Loving Kiss; Londesborough, 15 poems from the Yorkshire Wolds; and Autumn Walks in Queens Gardens, Wordspin Publications, 2013 onwards. My book Dreaming Ourselves Awake, is due out this year.

It will be a joy to talk about my dreams and creative worlds as part of the Eclectic Music Sundays in August 2023.
